Real Estate/Retail Reporter

The Des Moines Register/, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a retail and real estate reporter who can lead coverage of these consumer-focused topics.

This reporter should be equally comfortable diving into the boardroom decisions of Hy-Vee, an Iowa-based supermarket chain, and interviewing small business owners, who are coping with the whims of the economy. They will follow the trends of the real estate market, profiling interesting homes for sale as well as buying and selling trends in Iowa.

This reporter will file quick stories of comings and goings off the news, but also dive in for explanatory, narrative and watchdog stories, retail and ecommerce and shopping trend stories, and consumer scams and rip-offs stories. The ideal candidate will provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues and connect with people in the community.

This reporter will be ready to use social and multimedia to share the news and be willing to experiment and innovate to reach audiences.

We expect anyone who works with us to be constantly improving their skills. We offer a robust internal and Gannett-wide training program. This reporter will work with experienced editors and occasionally be partnered with other veteran reporters on projects.
