JOB SUMMARY:
The Government Mortgage Underwriter is an advanced-level position within Michigan First Mortgage. The Government Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for reviewing loan submissions to ensure that satisfaction of agency, investor and/or credit union guidelines and requirements. The role requires evaluation of the loan characteristics in such a way as to maximize profitability, minimize risk exposure and provide a positive member experience.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews new loan submissions and conditions ensuring they meet the applicable guidelines.
  • Resourceful and skillful use of internal and external policies, procedures, guidelines and tools is essential to success in this role
  • Proficient use of automated underwriting systems (DU, LPA, TOTAL, GUS)
  • Ensures that Michigan First Mortgage operating standards are met, according to policies and procedures, as well as service level standards
  • Reviews applications to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and investor requirements are satisfied
  • Reviews property appraisal reports, as well as internal and external tools, for evaluating acceptable collateral and value
  • Analyzes documentation such as credit, income, assets, appraisal and title to make sound underwriting decisions based on this analysis
  • Reviews documentation within Encompass LOS paperless system and ensures documents are properly classified and organized
  • Makes quality underwriting decisions while maintaining turn-time expectations
  • Reviews and clears conditions on all loans to ensure a complete loan package prior to closing
  • Utilizes proprietary and on-line tools to help combat fraudulent activity and ensure quality loan decisions
  • Communicates across various team channels with clear and concise language to ensure understanding of requirements relative to originating a saleable and insurable loan
  • Proactively engages team members to resolve internal and external member questions and concerns
  • Continually reviews underwriting environment, and suggests improvement opportunities to management
  • Acts as a recognized subject matter expert and partners with leadership on underwriting-related issues by providing analytical support, and counseling advice for their functional areas
  • Special projects, as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field
  • Ten+ years previous experience required in a residential mortgage underwriting role that required end-to-end ownership of the loan file from initial decision to clear-to-close
  • Intermediate knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Expert knowledge of Conventional and FHA required. VA, MSHDA, and USDA knowledge preferred but not required
  • Proficiency of Encompass preferred
  • Exceptional customer service in a highly collaborative environment with internal team members required
  • Underwriter designation certification (FHA DE CHUMS required, VA SAR/LAAP optional)
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels
  • Ability to positively project the Michigan First Mortgage team and Michigan First Credit Union
