Reporting to the Head of Mortgage Operations, the Mortgage Underwriter will be responsible for providing mortgage underwriting skills and expertise to support the development of Tandem Banks mortgage portfolio.

Our team

We are a bespoke mortgage team of 9 which includes Underwriters, Case Managers and Administrators. This new role is to assist the existing Underwriting Team with the growing pipeline and underwriting of complex, high value Residential and BTL mortgage business.

What you will be working on:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Managing all aspects of a mortgage application from Enquiry to Credit Sanction and being a direct point of contact for our panel of Mortgage Brokers. Applicants will be based in the UK and overseas.
  • Work to agreed underwriting policies and escalate cases where necessary to the appropriate Delegated Lending Authorities
  • Manage underwriting risk and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • Develop robust rationales for the acceptance or rejection of new business, balancing commercial needs with responsible lending within a regulated environment.
  • Fully understand and comply with operational procedures, requirements and SLA's
  • Liaise with Mortgage Intermediaries, Solicitors and Valuers
  • Work with the mortgage processing team to ensure that all activity is executed in a timely manner
  • Maintain suitable MI to enable a detailed understanding of Mortgage processing pipeline
  • Maintain the mortgage manual making recommendations for changes to the Lead Underwriter
  • Work under the direction and guidance of the Lead Underwriter and alongside other internal stakeholders including Compliance, Operations, IT and Distribution

What we're looking for:

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following experience, skills and behaviours:

  • Has at least ten years UK retail mortgage experience
  • Self-motivated, hands on and comfortable owning and delivering a range of activities with limited resources
  • Good Credit/Financial analysis skills
  • Strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills
  • Has developed, delivered and managed Mortgage propositions
  • Extensive experience of working with Mortgage Intermediaries
  • Experienced in retail bank mortgage processes and procedures
  • Experienced in the end to end Mortgage process and Customer experience
  • Good understanding of TCF, AML, KYC and Conduct risk
  • Good understanding of mortgage security
