Mortgage Loan Underwriting Supervisor ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT Incumbent’s primary function is to manage, direct, and implement underwriting strategies and objectives to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality loan decisions in accordance with credit policy and service level agreements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises both Residential and Government Mortgage Loan Underwriters. Ensures proper underwriting standards are implemented in order to safeguard company assets and ensure conformity for investor standards review and validate borrower(s): income (including complex business and personal tax returns), credit, asset documentation, title and fraud reports
  • Maintain production standard goals as established by management.
  • Be proactive in researching general underwriting scenarios and guidelines to stay up to date.
  • Ensures proper underwriting standards are implemented in order to safeguard company assets and ensure conformity for investor standards Review and validate borrower’s) including complex business and personal tax returns), credit, asset documentation, title and fraud reports.
  • Partner with Production Sales and Operations to promote and achieve the highest level of customer service.
  • Prioritize and manage files among new submissions, documents, and funding.
  • Partner with Compliance, Risk management and Quality Control to ensure alignment and achievement of risk profile and goals.
  • Work as a team with loan officers and other professionals to ensure file completeness.
  • Review appraisal process to ensure the value of the property is accurately presented.
  • Maintain production standard goals as established by management.
  • Be proactive in researching general underwriting scenarios and guidelines to stay up to date..
  • Partner with Production Sales and Operations to promote and achieve the highest level of customer service.
  • Underwriting Pipeline Management: prioritize and manage files amount new submission documents and funding.
  • Maintain SLA’s in accordance with Underwriting Standard and Expectations.
    • Assesses quality and production of Underwriters and assist in communicating goals with the team.
    • Facilitates action plans, training, and disciplinary action as needed.
    • Resolves problem files, questions, and escalates Mortgage Loan Underwriting Manager, VP of Operations and/or SVP, Real Estate Lending when required.
    • Attends calibration calls and/or meeting with Sales and Operations, when needed.
    • Conducts individual 1:1 meetings with underwriting to discuss progress, goals and or performance improvement.
    • Monitors and approved e-Time and PTO requests for direct reports.
    • Holds team meetings and provides updates on any policy changes/announcements from leadership.
    • Supervisor will review files as needed to weigh credit risk and ensure that the liability taken on by the VyStar Credit Union will result in a saleable loan and/or exposure to our mortgage portfolio.
    • Supervisor will be responsible to assist with the training and on-boarding new underwriters.
    • Represent the department as Subject Matter Expert for projects pertaining to Underwriting.
    • Supervisor will be responsible for maintaining underwriting scenario mailbox, second level denials, assist with maintenance of current underwriting guidelines approved by SVP, Real Estate Lending and the Mortgage Loan Underwriting Manager.
    • Assists the Mortgage Loan Underwriting Manager with credit underwriting training, assisting underwriters obtaining FHA DE and VA Lapp designations. Review training flashes prepared by the Underwriting Manager in regard to guideline changes, updates, systems enhancements, etc.
    • Partner with Compliance, Risk management and Quality Control to ensure alignment and achievement of risk profile and goals.
    • Work as a team with loan officers and other professionals to ensure file completeness.
    • Review appraisal process to ensure the value of the property is accurately presented.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Must have a minimum 3 years’ experience supervising FHA and VA Government Underwriting.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in mortgage underwriting including conventional, FHA, VA, and/or specialty program underwriting.
  • Must have an active DE CHUMS, LAPP and SARS.
  • Strong analytical and decision making/problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of ATR/QM requirements
  • Encompass LOS experience required
EDUCATION
  • High School or GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required if candidate has 5+ years government lending experience.
